Did you get some ashes too?
These are the types of questions I ask at grief group
“Did you get ashes too?” she asked from across the well-lit kitchen.
I nodded as I placed my hands deep into the pockets of my worn-out jeans.
“Yeah, we did” I whispered “but my mom and my brother spread them in Spain without me. Well,” I paused, “there was a bigger amount we spread in the mountains. I didn’t touch them.”
Three other women standing behind the big granite island nodded, murmuring their understanding.
“Cheryl Strayed ate some of her mother’s” said one woman, “and I heard you can have ashes turned into diamonds if you want to turn your person into jewelry.”
“That’s different,” I thought to myself, “but certainly understandable.”
We all do what we can to keep remnants of those we love. If I turned my dad into a diamond, I’d be afraid I’d lose him all over again in a smaller form.
Then, all of the sudden, the somber tone changed and five grieving women turned their attention to Game of Thrones. The newest episode was set to start in under twenty minutes, bringing our dinner to an appropriate ending.
